Description of squalane

Squalane is an emollient that helps prevent moisture loss and restore suppleness to the skin. It is also a source of beneficial fatty acids that replenish the skin. One of the unique aspects of squalane is that it is a modified and stable form of squalene, one of the key components of our sebum. This makes squalane a biocompatible ingredient that the skin recognizes and absorbs instantly.

Squalane is mostly plant-based. It can be sourced from olive oil, for example. It can also be produced from a type of yeast called saccharomyces cerevisiae, or from animal sources.

Despite its sebum-like nature, squalane is lightweight and non-greasy. It can also help strengthen the skin barrier by helping it be less sensitive.

Beyond its moisturizing properties, squalane also functions as an antioxidant. The antioxidant benefits of squalane also help it protect the skin’s sebum from something called lipid peroxidation, which likely plays a role in the development of acne.

Squalane has been used as a cosmetic ingredient for decades and has a long history of safety.
