Description of sorbitol

Sorbitol is a polyol naturally present in many fruits such as plums, apples and cherries. Industrially, it is obtained for example, by the hydrogenation of corn or glucose syrup, and comes in the form of a white and sweet crystalline powder.


It is quite frequently found as a humectant in moisturizing creams, it helps the creams to keep their fluid appearance after opening. In food, it is found as an additive under the name E420 or as a sweetener for diabetics.
