Description of pentylene glycol
Pentylene glycol is an ingredient that occurs naturally in some plants (such as sugar beets and corn cobs), but is most commonly obtained in labs when used in cosmetics. It is a solvent, helping other ingredients penetrate. It also has humectant properties, meaning it binds well to water, making it a good moisturizing agent. It also helps improve the texture of skin care formulas and has mild preservative properties when used in amounts between 1% and 5%.
There are reports that pentylene glycol can be a skin sensitizer. However, as with many ingredients, quantity and how it is used is critical. In cosmetic formulations, pentylene glycol concentrations range up to 5%, which is considered safe for leave-on formulas.
