Description of ceramide 3
Ceramide 3 (also known as ceramide NP or N-stearoyl phytosphingosine) is one of several types of ceramides naturally found in the skin. It plays a vital role as a major component of the skin’s outer layers (healthy skin is typically composed of 50% ceramides, with the majority of the NP variety). “N” represents the type of normal fatty acid associated with this ingredient, and “P” represents its phytosphingosine base.
Ceramides used in skincare can be created synthetically or naturally derived from plants. Research shows that skincare products containing ceramide 3 can help improve the look and feel of dry or dehydrated skin due to its water-binding properties.
Ceramide NP has also been shown to strengthen the skin barrier to better resist external stressors. Overall, it helps keep skin supple and hydrated.
