Description of caprylyl glycol
Caprylyl glycol is a skin and hair conditioning agent that can be plant-based (coconut) or synthetic. It is an effective humectant, meaning it retains water.
Due to the structure and surface activity of caprylyl glycol, it also affects the viscosity and stability of emulsion products. Its solubility in water is limited.
Studies have also shown that caprylyl glycol has some antibacterial properties and can help strengthen the preservative blend used in some skin care products.
Caprylyl glycol has been found to be safe when used in cosmetics up to 5%. Toxicological testing has shown that caprylyl glycol is not irritating to the skin or eyes in amounts commonly used in cosmetics.
