Ingredient information
Description of ascorbyl glucoside
Ascorbyl glucoside is a stable derivative of vitamin C combined with glucose, a sugar. In order to perform its functions, it must be hydrolyzed by cellular alpha-glucosidase to release ascorbic acid.
When properly formulated and absorbed into the skin, it breaks down into ascorbic acid, also known as pure vitamin C. Once absorbed, its breakdown into vitamin C is gradual, creating what is known as a reservoir effect in the skin. This leads to longer-lasting benefits.
Ascorbyl glucoside is widely compatible with other cosmetic ingredients. Unlike the narrow pH range that ascorbic acid requires to be effective on the skin, ascorbyl glucoside works between a pH of 5 and 8, with the lower end of this spectrum considered better because it closely matches the skin’s normal pH range.
